OBESITY IS NO MORE A TABOO.

OBESITY IS NO MORE A TABOO.

Obesity, is one of the most common, yet dangerous disease of this era.  BMI-Body Mass Index , has become the most feared words of the recent times. An average BMI of 24.0 was considered ideal until a decade ago and now it has become 25.0(which, sure is considered a drastic increase). Obesity/Overweight might as well be hereditary or due to health implications like hormonal imbalance, thyroid, etc. But one of the main reasons for obesity is depression. A recent study states that people eat more than they even realize when under depression/anxiety. This might as well sound shocking because it’s often we see that people show their anger on their stomach rather on the cause of it. But yes, depression can lead us to over eat things mindlessly.

As the age-old saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure”. Obesity can be prevented way easier than being cured. Most of which includes a hail mental health along with physical exercise.

Here are a few tips to kickstart your ‘prevention’ regime.

  • EAT RIGHT: Coming to eating habits, there are two basic things to be taken into concern.
  1. What to eat?
    • Eat food rich in grains and pulses-which gives you enough stamina for all your everyday chores.
    • Consider taking more of vegetables than the main course itself. Two cups of veggies for one cup of rice should do the trick.
    • Sufficient intake of protein rich food like meat and poultry are also very much necessary to maintain a balanced diet.
    • Avoid too much intake of pre-processed or canned food with artificial ingredients.
    • Intake of aerated drinks should as well be brought down.
    • Strictly avoid red meat (beef, pork, etc).

And

  1. When to eat?
    • Breakfast is a must and it should be qualitatively as well as quantitatively chosen.
    • Do not skip breakfast. Also include a fruit, as it’s the most important meal of a day.
    • Lunch must comprise of a balanced diet of proteins, vitamins and carbohydrates in the right amount at the right interval of time every day.
    • Supper can be quantitatively tolerated but definitely not qualitatively. A good amount of fruits and light food is advised.
    • Keep in mind that anything should be eaten within 4 hours before sleep.
    • And food can be taken in small quantities in regular intervals instead of having to dump all at once.

  • WORK IT OUT: Cycling is considered one of the best ways to reduce weight and maintain a body’s metabolisms in the right way. Also does walking (in older people). Basic physical exercises like stretching and bending will certainly payoff.

  • JUST CHILL: Save yourself all your free time to do what you like and that which gives you peace of mind. Try meditating and keeping yourself calm at times of crisis which will save you from a lot of pressure and helps you evade depression. Yoga is one great tool that will help you out in relaxing both your mind and body alike. Take a hot shower or listen to music or sing at the top of your voice or dance till the earth crumbles! Do what it takes to make you feel light and pleasant, for its only when you’re relaxed and calm you know what you eat and plays a major role in preventing any disease for that matter!
